Good morning.
Welcome to Trinity Lutheran Church and School.
That's right.
That's right. It's a joy to be here together to worship Jesus. You know, this week is called. You guys know what this week is called in the church here?
It's called Holy Week, right?
This is Holy Week. Why would we call it Holy Week, Kinsley?
That's right. Right? Because this is the week that we remember, right? And celebrate and meditate on Jesus suffering and death for us, right? Why did he do it for us? To save us, to forgive us and to give us life.
And so we're focused this week on Jesus and what he's done for us. And so we're going to have church this morning and there's also church tonight, right? And then if you want, you guys are going to be in the foundry tomorrow, right? But then in the evening tomorrow, students, there's a service at 6 o' clock that you and your families could come to. All right, Tonight we're focused on Holy Thursday, or sometimes we call it Maundy Thursday.
And that's the night that Jesus had the Last Supper with his disciples. And then he was arrested by Roman soldiers.
And then tomorrow we're going to be focusing on Jesus death on the cross when he was crucified and died and was buried.
And then on Sunday, that's the real fun part.
The fun part of the story isn't Jesus dying on the cross. It's good because it's for us, but it's sad.
Easter morning. What do we celebrate, Sabrina?
Easter morning.
Caroline.
He rose from the dead. That's the fun celebration especially.
Okay, so this morning we're going to focus on Jesus and His Last Supper and also his sacrifice for us, for our sins, to forgive us all. Right, let's stand and begin with our first hymn.
[00:06:54] Speaker C: Knowing how the day Lamb of God foretold for ages now at last we are at now when you are.
[00:07:16] Speaker D: Super grateful.
[00:07:31] Speaker C: Heart to thee O dear ones only pour out my in our heart sinless lamb and fallen creature One last V
[00:07:51] Speaker A: to be one last.
See
[00:08:07] Speaker C: what was there that you could give.
The world to as the Lamb of
[00:08:37] Speaker B: God,
[00:09:08] Speaker C: You are with us. As you say,
[00:10:26] Speaker B: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
[00:10:30] Speaker E: Amen.
[00:10:32] Speaker B: Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.
If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness, therefore you are feared.
Since we are gathered to hear God's Word, call upon him in prayer and praise and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the fellowship of this altar.
Let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition.
Together as his people, let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking his grace for the sake of Christ and saying, God, be merciful to me, a sinner.
Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins and lead us to everlasting life.
Amen.
Almighty God, merciful Father, in holy baptism you declared us to be your children and gathered us into your one holy church in which you daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through your spirit.
Be in our midst, enliven our faith and graciously receive our prayer and praise through your son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
Gracious is the Lord, and righteous, our God is merciful.
I love the Lord because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy because he inclined his ear to me.
Therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
The snares of death encompassed me. The pangs of Sheol laid hold on me.
I suffered distress and anguish.
Then I called on the name of the Lord. O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul.
Gracious is the Lord, and righteous, our God is merciful.
[00:12:52] Speaker D: Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
[00:13:06] Speaker B: The Lord be with you.
Let us pray.
O Lord, in this wondrous sacrament, you have left us a remembrance of your passion.
Grant that we may so receive the sacred mystery of your body and blood, that the fruits of your redemption may continually be manifest in us.
For you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
Please be seated for the readings.
The Old Testament reading is from Exodus, chapter 24.
Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the just decrees.
And all the people answered with one voice and said, all the words that the Lord has spoken, we will do.
And Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord.
He rose early in the morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and 12 pillars according to the 12 tribes of Israel.
And he sent young men of the people of Israel who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the Lord.
And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he threw against the altar.
Then he took the book of the covenant and read it in the hearing of the people.
And they said, all that the Lord has spoken, we will do, and we will be obedient.
And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, behold the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.
Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu and 70 of the elders of Israel went up, and they saw the God of Israel.
There was under his feet, as it were, a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness.
And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel.
They beheld God and ate and drank.
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
The epistle is from Hebrews, chapter 9.
When Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent, not made with hands, that is, not of his creation, he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves, but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who, through the eternal Spirit, offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.
For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established.
For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.
Therefore, not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood.
For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, this is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.
And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship.
Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood.
And without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins.
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God. Please stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel.
The Holy gospel according to St. Matthew. The 26th chapter.
Glory to you, O Lord.
Now, on the first day of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus saying, where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?
He said, go into the city to a certain man and say to him, the teacher says, my time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.
And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them.
And they prepared the Passover.
When it was evening, he reclined at table with the 12.
And as they were eating, he said, truly I say to you, one of you will betray me.
And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him, one after another, is it I, Lord?
He answered, he who has dipped his hand in the dishonor with me will betray me.
The Son of Man goes as it is written of him. But woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.
It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.
Judas, who would betray him, answered, is it I, Rabbi?
He said to him, you have said so.
Now, as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it, broke it and gave it to the disciples and said, take, eat. This is my body.
And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, drink of it, all of you.
For this is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
I tell you, I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
And we confess our Christian faith with the words of the Apostles Creed.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty.
From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.
Amen.
Please be seated. We'll sing the next hymn number 575.
[00:21:10] Speaker A: Sa.
All underground is singing.
[00:23:54] Speaker E: Well, good morning, everyone.
Great to be in God's house this morning because of the celebration that we have seems like a strange word for Holy Week. But there is a celebration, isn't there?
Because this week shows us our salvation.
I wanted to talk a little bit about those passages that Pastor read to us a moment ago, because I want you to understand what they are about.
The first one came from the book of Exodus. And many of you know that's in the Old Testament, right? The Old Testament is a way that God showed us that a savior was going to come some day.
Of course, the New Testament shows us he came.
He came as Jesus, didn't he? Our Savior.
Well, to get that whole story started, how many of you have read about Moses and studied about Moses in your classrooms? Yeah, a lot of you. Well, Moses was called upon by God to lead God's people out of Egyptian slavery and home to the promised land. You know that part, right?
You know that part.
So on the way to the promised land, God took them past a mountain called Mount Sinai. And God called Moses to come up to the top of that mountain. And at the top of that mountain, God gave Moses the commandments and all the law that God wanted his people to follow.
And then Moses came down from the mountain and he told all the people all of those things that God told him.
Now, how many of you have heard of the Ten Commandments?
Practically everybody's hand goes up.
And those were some of the things that Moses told God's people. And did you hear what they said?
Did you hear what they said? What did they say?
We will follow all of these commandments. Did you hear when Pastor read that?
We will follow? They didn't say it just once.
They said it twice. Right?
Now I want to just change the scene for just a quick minute. How many here have taken archery in in foundry? Oh, lots of hands.
Those commandments, those commandments are like Moses set up a target over here, aren't they? And then he said, now when you go through your life, when you shoot an arrow, you hit that target, you hit those commandments.
Honor your mother and father.
Hit that target.
Don't steal. Hit that target.
Don't tell lies about people. Hit that target.
Worship God on the Sabbath day. Hit that target. Don't have any other gods. Well, I've named what, five or six so far.
Now, what did those people say?
We're just going to do them all.
How'd that work out?
Not very good, right? They're missing the target all over the place. By the way, when you did archery, how many of you missed the target every once in a while?
Yeah, boy, I'd be missing the target too.
But that's what it was like Moses said, God's given us this target to hit, and we'll hit it. We'll hit it. And then they discover they can't hit it.
Now what?
Now what?
We're missing the target all over the place. And that's why what happened in that passage is so, so precious.
They sacrificed some animals, and those animals burnt offerings.
And they took the blood of those animals that they sacrificed. And some of it they splashed on an altar, and some of it they splashed on the people. Now that sounds awful, doesn't it? How would you like to have blood splashed on you today?
Not me.
But that's what they did. And they had to stop and think, well, what's that all about?
Why are we splashing blood all over the place, on the altar and on people?
Because when we miss the mark, when we miss the target, when we disobey God's commands, there's got to be some kind of payment.
Really no different than like when you're in your classroom and you do something wrong.
I won't ask for a show of hands how that happens, but it does happen.
And your teacher or maybe a fellow student says, that was wrong.
You need to apologize for that.
There's got to be a payment. Maybe it's a timeout in your classroom, or maybe you lose your recess.
But if you have a good teacher, and I think you do, they'll not only bring it to your attention that something was wrong and there has to be a payment, but that they'll also bring about forgiveness. And that's what the blood was about. There had to be payment. Something had to die.
That's the payment.
But when that something dies, it forgives.
Our sin doesn't forgives. And that's what was so great about this. They offered a burnt offering and sacrifice and peace offering to the Lord. And Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the altar and sprinkled on the people. And he said, the blood that was thrown on the people, he said, behold the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words. In other words, he's saying, God is making a promise to you that with this sacrifice, your sins are going to be forgiven and I will love you forever. That's a pretty good God, huh?
That's the kind of God that says, you're going to miss the mark. I know it. You can tell me. You can tell me you're always going to hit it, but when you miss it, it.
We have a system of sacrifice. God Set this all up so that your sins can be forgiven and we can continue to have a relationship. God and man.
Now, the guy who wrote to the Hebrews, he said the same thing. He said, for every command of the law has been declared by Moses to all the people, he took that same story, and he's retelling it. He took the blood of calves and goats with water and scarlet and wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the law and all the people, saying, this is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you. And in the same way, he sprinkled with blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship. Indeed, under the law, almost everything is purified with blood. Blood. And without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.
Well, I don't know about you, but I'm kind of glad we don't have to be sacrificing goats and bulls and splashing blood all over the altar and on everybody on a worship day or a day like today where you come and you say, boy, I've goofed up again, and I need God's forgiveness. And Pastor Vanderheide or I, we'd say, well, fine, come on up, and we'd splatter you with blood.
Oh, that just doesn't sound good at all, does it?
But actually, that's what really does happen when we come to a worship service like this. Because listen to what Pastor read to us in the Gospel lesson.
Remember the New Testament. That shows us it was Jesus who came.
Remember?
Ha.
Says now as they were eating, because Jesus got his disciples together to celebrate the Passover. That's another whole story. We'll talk about that someday.
They're eating this meal, and Jesus really wanted to eat this meal with his disciples because he had something he wanted to tell them. And there were lots of interesting things that happened in that meal. I don't know if you noticed or not. Jesus said something about Judas, and all the other disciples were like, oh, is it me? Is it me? Did you hear that part?
[00:32:59] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:33:00] Speaker E: Pretty interesting. But the main reason for that meal, Jesus, as they were eating it, says, jesus took bread, and after blessing it, he broke it and he gave it to the disciples. And he said, take, eat.
This is my body.
Who's heard those words before?
Yeah. And then he said he took a cup, and when he'd given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, drink of it, all of you.
Here it comes.
For this is my blood of the covenant.
That's no different than what happened in the Old Testament when Moses Said, this is God's way of saying he loves you.
He's made it possible for blood to pay for your sins and wipe them and wash them clean.
Jesus says, this is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many. Here it comes for the forgiveness of sins.
So that Old Testament picture of a savior someday and try to hit the mark, and when you miss, there's forgiveness.
That's the New Testament story. Jesus says, listen, I've come because people have missed the mark their whole lives and all of these centuries.
And that's why I like what the writer to the Hebrews said. If the sprinkling of defiled persons with blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offer himself without blemish to God?
How much more will he be able to purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God? In other words, how much more is Jesus sacrifice on the cross, his shedding of his blood enable us to be forgiven.
And that's what's happening in these lessons today. Jesus is taking a hold of that Old Testament picture of Moses sprinkling blood and saying, that's me now.
I'm going to sprinkle. I'm going to give you my body and blood for the forgiveness of your sins.
So that's why I said, it's happening today.
Well, now all you children who don't come to Holy Communion yet, because we want to make sure you understand fully what it's all about, that Jesus really is present with us in body and blood, however miraculous and hard to understand that is, he says, it is, this is my body, this is my blood, and it's for you, for the forgiveness of your sins.
So always listen on that and go to school on that to understand. Jesus really has come among us.
And he tells us all kinds of reasons why he did it this way. And I listed just a few of them here.
When he says, take and eat, this is my body.
And he took a cup and he says, drink of it, all of you.
He says, that blood is poured out. Boy, that language poured out is reserved exclusively for people who are going through some sort of a violent death, like the martyrs whose blood was poured out or persecuted prophets whose blood was poured out.
Unjust suffering for a just person. Isn't that just like Jesus?
His blood poured out and he's sinless, and yet he exchanges his life for ours. Another reason he institutes this meal like he does is. He wants us to know it's not magic.
He doesn't just say, well, doesn't matter if you missed the mark.
You can keep trying. That's not what he says.
He says, I'm going to pay for it with my blood.
I'm going to cover it.
So when we come to Holy Communion, we have to recognize, hey, I'm a sinner and I need his forgiveness.
And he calls us to come to this meal often because he wants us to remember what he has done and to fellowship with one another and encourage others to remember what he has done for us.
And there's this promise that he brings to us in Holy Communion, this promise that he is with us always because he uses a present tense verb. You know about verbs, right?
Who knows about verbs?
Those are action parts of sentences, right? Jesus uses a really important but little verb. He says is. He says, this bread is my body, this wine is my blood.
When he says is, that's present tense.
That means he's here with us always.
Not someday in the future, not someday way in the past, which, well, he might show up again someday. No, he's with us always.
Right here, today and all of our todays. Isn't that good news? Huh?
So guess what?
Jesus wanted to have that meal with. With his disciples and all who would come after those disciples, meaning we who are alive today.
Jesus desires to have that meal with you.
Amen.
Amen.
[00:39:50] Speaker B: Let's stand for prayer.
Lord Jesus Christ, you said to us, well, to your disciples and to those who would come after them.
Surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Here you are among us with your gifts and promises, with your forgiveness.
And we thank you and we ask that you would wrap your arms around all of us, that you would continue to give us your holy spirit and to make us to know your love and to remind us that we're in the family now as God's children.
Bless us all together.
Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer.
Father. Bless our school. Bless the children in our school here today and those who aren't with us today.
Make them grow strong and wise.
Bless their families.
Bless our teachers and staff, all who work in the school, all who volunteer in the school.
Bless us all together.
Give us all unity in purpose and joy in our work.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Lord Jesus Christ, you poured out your life for us, offering yourself completely for our forgiveness. And so that we could have life and be restored in our relationship with God.
Give us strength to look to you, and we pray that you would continue to forgive our sins and restore us when we sin.
You know our sins. There are many. We miss the mark all the time and in many ways. And there you are. With your forgiveness. Help us to forgive one another in our homes, in school, in our church, in our community.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Lord Jesus Christ, you offer to us this morning, yourself, your body and blood for the forgiveness of our sins and to draw us all up into your life to unite us together in yourself.
We thank you. We thank you for your sacrifice for us, for your last supper and your rest, for your death on the cross and burial in the grave.
For your resurrection from the dead and victory over death.
Give us confident and peaceful hearts in Jesus. Give us in yourself. Give us the joy of your life and resurrection. Bless us as we receive these gifts this morning. Your body and blood. Give us repentant hearts and faith and joy at being made, your body.
All these things we ask through you, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Father.
Amen.
Let's take a moment to share the peace of the Lord with one another.
[00:43:37] Speaker A: Sam.
Lay by, bringing to the Lord of
[00:44:31] Speaker B: Abundance our humble offerings.
[00:44:54] Speaker A: It.
Sa.
[00:46:05] Speaker B: Let's stand for the service of the sacrament.
The Lord be with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.
It is truly good, right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, O Lord, Holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings you so freely bestow on us and all creation.
Above all, we give thanks for your boundless love shown to us when you sent your only begotten son, Jesus Christ into our flesh and laid on him our sin, giving him into death, that we might not die eternally because he is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity. All who believe in him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life.
Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify your glorious name evermore. Praising you and saying,
[00:47:20] Speaker C: Holy, holy Lord,
[00:47:23] Speaker D: God of Sabaoth, adored heaven and earth with full acclaim.
[00:47:30] Speaker C: Shout the glory of your name.
Sing hosanna in the highest Sing hosanna
[00:47:38] Speaker D: to the Lord Truly blessed comes in
[00:47:44] Speaker C: the name of the Lord.
[00:47:52] Speaker B: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of all creation.
For you have had mercy on us and given your only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
At your command, Abraham prepared to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice on the mountain.
Yet in mercy, you provided a ram as a substitute.
We give you thanks that on Calvary you spared not your only son, but sent him to offer his life as a ransom for many.
As we eat and drink his body and blood, grant us, like Abraham, our Father, to trust in your promise now fulfilled in Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
Hear us as we pray in his name and as he has taught us.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever.
Amen.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread. When he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to the disciples and said, take, eat. This is my body which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me.
In the same way also he took the cup after supper. When he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, drink of it, all of you. This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do as often as you drink it in remembrance of me.
The peace of the Lord be with you always.
Amen.
[00:50:01] Speaker C: O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of Lamb of God.
You'd take the sin of the world away.
O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, have mercy on us, Lord, we pray.
O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God.
You'd take the sin of the world away.
Have mercy on us, Jesus Christ, and
[00:50:53] Speaker D: grant us peace, O Lord.
We pray.
[00:51:06] Speaker E: Children to stand back up, if you would, please. Just the children.
Normally, in our communion services, what we do is we invite families to come up, don't we? And if you are a member at this church, you know you'll come up to the altar and you'll receive a blessing. Because. Because you haven't been through what we call confirmation instruction yet.
Well, there's too many of you here today to do that. But what I want to say to you is you all are a blessing to us. That you come to this school and you are blessed because you have teachers who care about you, who watch over you, who. Who instruct you in ways that will help you grow in your mind and in your body and your spirit. Because it's a Christian school.
And so with those things taken together, that you are a blessing, that this school is a blessing, I want to extend a blessing to you as though you had come up to the front. And what we ask people to do is to cross themselves like this.
And we do this so that we know that you're here for a blessing. And that blessing has to do with recalling what Jesus has done for all
[00:52:33] Speaker A: of us,
[00:52:36] Speaker E: that he's given his life for us and that he loves us with an everlasting love always. He says, I will be with you always.
So the blessing of our Almighty God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit rest upon you now and always.
Amen.
You may be seated.
[00:53:11] Speaker B: Take and eat the true body of Christ given for you.
Take and drink the true blood of Christ shed for you for the forgiveness of your sins.
The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen and preserve you in body and soul to life everlasting, depart in peace. Amen.
[00:53:46] Speaker C: God will provide the Lamb of Christ.
Worthy is the Lamb whose death makes me his own.
[00:53:59] Speaker A: The lady Sa.
Jesus, the body and blood of our
[00:55:40] Speaker B: Lord Jesus Christ strengthen and preserve you in body and soul to life everlasting, depart in peace. Amen.
[00:56:07] Speaker A: Sam.
It.
Sam.
[00:57:50] Speaker C: From you.
[00:58:15] Speaker A: Ra.
[00:58:41] Speaker B: Sh.
[00:59:34] Speaker A: Jesus.
Ram.
Sa.
[01:00:50] Speaker C: For I have seen the glory of your redeeming grace.
[01:02:13] Speaker B: After this prayer tonight, if you come to the service again with your family this evening, you'll see the altar stripped. So tonight, the end of the service is going to have ladies coming up and taking all the parts of the altar and all the things that belong up here on the altar altar away until it's just bare.
And that's to kind of represent the arrest of Jesus.
So at his last supper, and then he was arrested and taken away.
And it's a preparation for tomorrow Good Friday. So tomorrow the altar is just going to have black.
And it's going to be just a different way to focus on Jesus dying for our sins. So this morning, we're not going to strip it yet. We're going to prepare it for Good Friday, tomorrow night or tonight, stripping it. But we are going to end with Psalm 22. Okay? And I'm going to chant Psalm 22.
Psalm 22 speaks of Jesus crucifixion.
So you can listen to the psalm and you can think about Jesus dying on the cross for you, all right? And then we're going to leave. We're going to leave in silence, okay? So when the service ends, we're just going to. Students, you can listen to your teachers, all right? And you're Just going to quietly exit, okay?
All right. Let us pray.
We give thanks to you, Almighty God, that you have refreshed us through this salutary gift.
And we implore you that of your mercy you would strengthen us through the same, in faith toward you and in fervent love toward one another through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
[01:04:23] Speaker D: My God. My God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me from the words of my groaning?
O my God. I cry by day, but you do not answer.
And by night, but I find no rest.
Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.
In you our fathers trusted.
They trusted and you delivered them to you they cried and were rescued.
In you they trusted and were not put to shame.
[01:05:18] Speaker C: But I am a worm and not a man.
[01:05:23] Speaker D: Scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
All who see me mock me.
They make mouths at me.
[01:05:35] Speaker C: They wag their heads.
[01:05:38] Speaker D: He trusts in the Lord.
Let him deliver him, let him rescue him, for he delights in him.
Yet you are he who took me from the womb.
You made me trust you at my mother's breast.
On you was I cast from my birth and from my mother's womb you have been my God.
Be not far from me, for trouble is near and there is none to help.
Many bowls encompass me. Strong bowls of Bashan surround me.
They open wide their mouths at me like a ravening and roaring lion.
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart is like wax, it is melted within my breast.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd and my tongue sticks to my jaws.
You lay me in the dust of death.
Four dogs encompass me.
A company of evildoers encircles me.
They have pierced my hands and my feet.
I can count all my bones.
They stare and gloat over me.
They divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
But you, O Lord, do not be far off.
O you, my help.
Come quickly to my aid.
Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog.
Save me from the mouth of the lion.
You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen.
I will tell of your name to my brothers in the midst of the congregation.
I will praise you, you who fear the Lord.
Praise him, all you offspring of Jacob. Glorify him and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel.
For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard when he cried to him.
From you comes my praise in the great congregation.
My vows I will perform before those who fear him.
The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied.
Those who seek him shall praise the Lord.
May your hearts live forever.
All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you.
For kingship belongs to the Lord, and He rules over the nations.
All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship.
Before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive.
Posterity shall serve him.
It shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn.
That he has done.
